Alex McKiernan and John Locke are back with host John Haskell in this episode of the Ranchonomics podcast to discuss the concept of legacy in ranching. Building on the discussion from last week's episode about mission and vision, John Locke stresses that legacy begins with a vision and can be either a blessing or a burden, depending on how it's understood and managed. They share stories that illustrate the impact of past generations' decisions on future ones, emphasizing the need for reflective listening and intentional stewardship. This conversation also highlights the importance of creating value beyond financial assets, such as fostering innovation and community service, to ensure a sustainable legacy for future generations.
In this episode, Living and Leaving a Ranch Legacy with Alex McKiernan and John Locke, we cover:
The need to regularly revisit and adapt a business's mission and vision
The importance of not letting past generations' expectations limit future generations
Being good listeners and understanding the intentions behind past generations' decisions
Creating value beyond assets and thinking about the long-term impact and how they can continue to provide value over multiple generations
Meet Alex McKiernan:
Alex McKiernan and his wife, Chloe Diegel, own and operate Robinette Farms, whose mission is "Great food that transforms people and the land." Alex is passionate about connecting people to the land through food and adventure, and using agriculture and outdoor experience to improve our shared natural resources.
Meet John Locke:
John Locke is a partner in the Locke Division of JD Hudgins located in Hungerford, TX. John is a gifted instructor and connects with participants because he has been in their shoes. John grew up raising registered Brahman cattle and is still heavily involved in the family’s business, but he knew there was more to ranching than raising quality cattle. John and his family got involved in Ranching for Profit and were members of Executive Link for 6 years, during which time John took on a larger leadership role in their business and became a leader in regenerative grazing. John is passionate about the principles taught at Ranching for Profit and has experienced firsthand the transformation that the application of those principles can make in a ranching business.
